Stitching

The suturing protocol regulates surgical manipulations in dentistry. The concept of a clinical protocol in medicine is a documented set of instructions that determine the actions of a doctor in each typical situation. What is the protocol for applying sutures in dentistry? These are instructions for the sequence of actions to reduce wounds in the oral cavity.

The need for surgical intervention and suturing of the mucous membrane arises in such cases:

  • removal of large cysts;
  • cystomia;
  • treatment of inflammatory processes: abscesses, osteomyelitis, periodontitis;
  • resection of teeth;
  • gingivectomy;
  • gingivoplasty;
  • sinus lifting.

Prosthetics and preparation for it require surgical procedures. In general, all manipulations related to the dissection of soft tissues require the application of sutures.

Procedural stages

The suturing protocol is performed during surgical operations with the aim of reducing the area of the wound and accelerating its healing process. Bleeding is prevented and wound infection is prevented. The following stages of stitching are distinguished:
At the preparatory stage, you need to prepare all tools and suture materials in a tray, perform aseptic procedures.

The main stage of applying a seam. It is carried out from the side of the mobile edge of the wound to the immobile one. The edges of the tissue flap are held with tweezers. The tissue is grasped with a needle at a distance of 3 mm from the edge. The ends of the threads tighten the wound, creating loops. It is important to choose the correct seam pitch, as well as the tightening force.
At the final stage, the sewn area is treated with a special solution, and sterile napkins are applied.

For faster and safer wound healing, the dentist prescribes drugs, as well as post-procedural care of the operated area. These are usually preventive rinses with anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial solutions. On the first day, it is recommended to apply cold to reduce swelling and prevent bleeding.

Modern suture materials in dentistry

The suturing protocol requires the use of a defined set of tools and safe suture materials. Usually, the following tools are used when applying seams:

  • needle holder;
  • double-toothed hook, surgical forceps;
  • eye scissors;
  • sewing needles.

Suture material in dentistry is a surgical thread that connects tissue and promotes its healing. Modern materials have characteristics that will ensure rapid regeneration and prevent complications. They are atraumatic, reliable, and biocompatible.

What types of suture material are used in dentistry:

  • those that dissolve;
  • are conditionally dissolved;
  • do not dissolve.

In addition to the characteristics of biodegradation, suture threads differ in structure and material of manufacture. All of them meet the requirements of strength, resistant to infections, plastic, and reliable in nodes.
