Dental Anesthesia

Dental Anesthesia — Types, Applications, and Safety

Anesthesia is the temporary reduction or complete elimination of sensation in the entire body or a specific area. In dentistry, anesthesia is essential to ensure that the patient feels no pain during treatment.

Most commonly, this is achieved through the administration of medications that block pain impulses from reaching the brain.

Types of Anesthesia in Dentistry

Anesthesia in dentistry can be divided into:

  • Local anesthesia (commonly used),
  • General anesthesia (used rarely, in complex surgical procedures),
  • Pharmacological and non-pharmacological methods.

Non-pharmacological anesthesia techniques include:

  • Audio analgesia (distraction through sound/music),
  • Electro-analgesia (nerve stimulation),
  • Hypnotic or suggestive analgesia,
  • Computer-controlled anesthesia systems.

Pharmacological anesthesia

This involves injecting a local anesthetic that temporarily blocks nerve conduction in the treated area. After a certain time, the medication is metabolized, and full sensitivity returns. Thanks to modern anesthetics, dental procedures can be performed without pain or discomfort.

Local Anesthesia — The Most Commonly Used

Local anesthesia is much safer for the body than general anesthesia and is widely used in dental procedures. While older agents like lidocaine and novocaine were common in the past, modern and more effective anesthetics are now standard.

There are three main types of local anesthesia:

  • Topical Anesthesia
A gel or spray is applied directly to the mucous membrane surface. This is used to numb soft tissue before an injection or to relieve discomfort during superficial treatments (e.g., gingivitis, ulcers).
  • Infiltration Anesthesia
Used to numb a single tooth or a small area of gum tissue. Often applied during treatment of deep cavities or when removing the dental pulp. The injection is made near the root apex of the targeted tooth.
  • Nerve Block (Conductive) Anesthesia
Used for more complex procedures, such as tooth extractions, abscess drainage, or treatment of advanced infections. It blocks the entire nerve branch, offering a broader and longer-lasting effect.
