Ceramic crown based on zirconium oxide

Zirconium – popular material for dental prosthetics. It has been known to medicine for a long time and was originally used for endoprosthesis of joints. In modern dentistry, crowns made of zirconium dioxide are used because of their aesthetics and natural appearance. In addition, in terms of strength (up to a thousand MPa), the material is a good alternative to metal.

What is a zirconia crown

Crowns made of zirconium have high aesthetics – they have a shining milky-white shade and perfectly imitate the natural color of enamel. There are two-layer and monolithic structures. The basis for their manufacture is zirconium dioxide, a refractory material from which structures are carved.

Due to their special properties, they are called integral anatomical crowns. Zirconium has increased strength and biocompatibility, is able to recover from microdamage, is not afraid of acidic and alkaline environments. Special additives make it possible to manufacture prostheses of complex shapes, different thicknesses and degrees of transparency.

In our NOWA clinic in Warsaw, we offer the installation of zirconium crowns on favorable terms.

When is it recommended to choose a zirconia crown?

Our dentists recommend everyone to choose zirconium. Especially for patients of stomatological orthopedics.

Indications for prosthetics with this material are considered to be:

  • The presence of microcracks and chips on tooth enamel;
  • Untreatable darkening;
  • Diastemas (large interdental distances);
  • Diastemas (large interdental dotances);
  • The need to keep the remains of the tooth alive;
  • Diagnosis of deep penetrating caries.

Such prostheses are placed on chewing (side) teeth. Zirconium dioxide is not characterized by porosity, it is the least prone to abrasion, easily withstands chewing loads. Front teeth can be practically prosthetically made with a universal material. The naturalness of the species combined with strength and optical properties create an accurate imitation of a living, healthy row.

A zirconium crown on implants is an excellent option for both a single and a complete prosthesis.

People with allergies are advised to install zirconium structures. This is the most hypoallergenic material of all used in dental prosthetics. Their wearers are not familiar with the metallic taste, galvanic reactions, blue gums and other “charms” of metal structures in the oral cavity.

Qualified specialists work in our clinic and use advanced technologies. We know how to create a dream smile!

Advantages and disadvantages of zirconium prosthetics

Undeniable advantages of zirconium prostheses:

  • Safe crowns – zirconium is biologically compatible with the body, the structure of the material is close to bone tissue and does not provoke allergies;
  • Durability – not prone to cracks, microdamages are easily removed at the molecular level;
  • Durability – the service life of the structure is about 15 years;
  • Aesthetics – they naturally imitate tooth enamel due to similar optical characteristics, easily dyed to the desired shade;
  • Possibility to leave the tissues under the dental crown as much as possible – prosthetics does not require depulping and strong grinding;
  • There are no metal elements in the design – there is no discomfort and unpleasant sensations from oxidation, taste in the mouth and other side effects;
  • Low thermal conductivity – “living” teeth under a fixed prosthesis do not react to temperature changes;
  • Preservation of the original appearance and condition, which are not planted;
  • No impact on the gums, do not cause irritation and the appearance of a dark border;
  • Possibility to make veneers, dental bridges of any length (from 3 or more);
  • There is no risk of developing caries under the crowns.

Innovative technologies allow you to accurately reproduce the anatomical shape of the tooth, and the low weight eliminates the overload of the jaw muscles.

The high price is the only minus of these designs. But it is fully justified, given the list of advantages of the material.

Conditional disadvantages include the difficulty of material selection for patients with increased transparency of tooth enamel. They are recommended glass ceramics, a prosthesis made of porcelain mass.

How zirconium dioxide prostheses are installed

The process of prosthetics using this material is similar to the usual procedure: a cast is made using a gypsum self-hardening material, and a prosthesis is made on its basis. Next, a fitting is carried out and, if necessary, a slight correction.

Also, in our clinic, we use crowns made with the help of computer equipment, the frame is cut by milling (CAD / CAM).

Stage 1 Preparation

At the first stage, the dentist conducts an examination of the patient’s oral cavity, problems that may prevent the successful installation of the prosthesis are identified and eliminated. Diseased teeth are treated, tartar and caries are removed. It may also be necessary to form a hip tab or install a pin. The initial stage includes turning under the crown. Thanks to the properties of zirconium dioxide, there is no need to significantly grind the teeth. The permissible minimum thickness of the facing is only 0.4 mm.

Stage 2 Manufacturing

The technology of computer modeling, according to which a zirconium crown is made in the laboratory, is advantageously different from manual casting. It is based on laser scanning and assignment of parameters of future teeth using a computer program. This allows you to achieve accuracy and filigree. When the model is completely ready, the data in the form of a digital code is sent to the milling machine, the frame is sharpened.

Thanks to the improved manufacturing technique, when installing zirconium crowns, it was possible to reduce the gap between them and the teeth from 100 to 30 microns. This reduces the risk of inflammatory processes under construction. Also, computer modeling eliminates the risk of error when creating a blank for the future crown. As a result, they do not require additional fitting and finishing.

Stage 3 Fixation

The manufactured prosthesis takes its place in the prepared place. The patient is given time to assess the wearing comfort. In the absence of complaints, the structure is finally fixed with dental cement.

Zirconium crowns: advantages and disadvantages

Zirconium crowns are dental crowns made of zirconium dioxide, which is a biocompatible and durable material. Zirconium crowns have a number of advantages and disadvantages that should be taken into account when choosing a method of prosthetics.
Advantages:

  • do not cause allergic reactions and do not interact with the soft tissues of the oral cavity;
  • aesthetics;
  • do not have a metal frame that can shine through the gums or turn them gray;
  • manufacturing accuracy – processed using computer milling, which allows you to create crowns with high accuracy and anatomy;
  • wide possibilities of prosthetics;
  • durability (can serve up to 20 years or more);
  • preservation of a living tooth (installation of a zirconium crown requires minimal preparation of the tooth, which allows preserving its vitality and nerve).

Disadvantages of zirconium crowns include the high cost and difficulty of repair in case of damage.

Color range of zirconium crowns

The structures are white in color, which can be lighter or darker depending on the patient’s wishes. In addition, crowns can be colored in different colors with the help of special dyes that are applied to the surface of the material.
Special tables are used to select the color range of zirconium crowns. The selection of the color of zirconium crowns is carried out by a dentist or dental technician, taking into account the color of the adjacent teeth, gums, skin and hair of the patient. The goal of color selection is to achieve maximum similarity with natural teeth and harmony with the general appearance of the patient.

Can a zirconia crown split?

A zirconia crown is a very strong and durable structure that rarely splits or breaks. A zirconia crown can split or become damaged if it receives a strong impact, such as a fall.

Do zirconium crowns turn yellow?

Zirconia crowns usually do not yellow over time because zirconia is a strong and stable material that is not prone to oxidation or pigmentation.

Can zirconium crowns be recycled?

It is possible to recycle zirconium crowns, but it depends on the cause and degree of damage. If the crown has small chips or cracks, they can be repaired with a composite material that is selected for color and shape. If the crown has moved away from the tooth, but has no defects, it can simply be cemented using a special cement.
However, if the crown is badly damaged or beyond repair, it must be removed and a new one made.
