Amputation, or extirpation of the pulp, is an operation in which the vascular-nerve bundle of the tooth is removed. It is used as a method of treating pulpitis.
According to the method of operation, there is a distinction between vital and devital amputation of the pulp.
Vital amputation of the pulp is a gentle method of removing the vascular-nerve bundle, in which only the coronal part of the pulp is cut off. Vital amputation is indicated in those cases when the inflammatory process is in the initial stage and has not spread to the root part of the pulp. In most cases, the method of welcome amputation of the pulp is indicated for patients in childhood.
Devital amputation of the pulp is a method of removing the pulp, in which it is removed completely, that is, the crown and root parts. Devital amputation of the pulp is indicated in the late stages of the inflammatory process, when most of it is affected. The disadvantage of this method is that after the complete removal of the pulp, the tooth becomes “dead”.
